Other Application Materials

A complete grant application package may require several components besides the proposal narrative. Depending on your program's guidelines, you may need to prepare one or more of the following:

  • Letter to a program officer
Contacting a program officer to discuss your project is always a good idea. A telephone call or a short letter, like this sample letter [PDF], can initiate a fruitful discussion.
  • Cover sheet information
Most of the information you will need for your cover sheet or SF-424 is available on our Institutional Data for Grant Forms page.
  • University profile/description
The Institutional Research and Planning Office produces an annual Fact Book that includes the university profile, mission statement, strategic plan, and detailed data about the university's student body, resources, and finances. Grants Resources and Services produced this description of Appalachian's support services for faculty research (ASU login required), and the University Communications Virtual Toolbox (ASU login required) includes additional ready-to-use copy about various university programs.
  • Data management plan
A data management plan is required for all proposals to the National Science Foundation proposals and most proposals to other sponsors. This page covers the elements of a data management plan and who to contact at Appalachian State University to assist you in creating the plan your proposal may require.  Infomation includes sample plans and information on choosing a data repository for long-term preservation and sharing of data.
  • Evaluation plan
Most sponsors require an evaluation plan to evaluate the progress and impact of the funded project. The Online Evaluation Resource Library includes sample evaluation plans, instruments, and reports for six project types and topics: curriculum development; teacher education; faculty development; laboratory improvement; under-represented populations; and technology.
  • Postdoctoral mentoring plan
The National Science Foundation (NSF) requires applicants to include a mentoring plan if postdoctoral associates are included in the proposal. The NSF created this sample postdoctoral mentoring plan [PDF].
